Winter Operations: Salt Prewetting Project
2012-02-20

MRDC Operations Corporation is currently performing a trial application of prewetting rock salt with salt brine versus a known blended ratio of salt brine and a product called Ice-B-Gone; in order to review the performance of these prewetting products during Snow and Ice Control Operations.

This blended ratio of salt brine and Ice B Gone  is currently being used on several of MRDC’s plow routes, however; the two (2) main trial areas, where data is collected, are located in the vicinity of km 341 and 342 eastbound on the Fredericton-Moncton Highway.  When salt spreading operations are being performed, the rock salt is prewet with 100% salt brine at one trial site and the other site the rock salt is prewet with a blend ratio of 30:70 of Ice-B-Gone product and salt brine respectively.

At the two (2) main trial locations identified, when a storm arrives, data and observations are collected throughout the first two hours after the first salt application.  The data collected includes:  air temperature, road temperature, type of precipitation, snow accumulation, area of bare pavement and friction.  Upon completion of the storm, the period of time from the end of the storm to the time when bare pavement from edge of asphalt to edge of asphalt is achieved is documented at both sites. This collection of data and observations will allow MRDC to better analyze the different prewetting materials and their overall performance when used during Snow and Ice Control Operations.

***Ice-B-Gone is a product consisting of 80% magnesium chloride and 20% molasses.
